Basic Food Groups

The food culture is based on a century-old experience of selecting plants and animals with nutrition qualities. The term food, means everything that is used as food and drink in processed or unprocessed form, as well as spices, dyes and other substances that are added in the food for preservation that improves their appearance, smell or taste. Human choose food depending of food properties – appearance, taste, smell.

Food is classified in food groups. It is a source of vitaminsmineralsproteinsfats and carbohydrates. Commonly are known six basic food groups.

Basic Food Groups

Grain and cereal products (cereals, flour, bread, biscuits) – is the main group of five basic food group. They are a rich source of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, oils and proteins.

Meat, fish, eggs and their products (meat of mammals, birds, sea and river fish, eggs, wild and domestic birds). Meat is a major source of protein, as well as iron, zinc and vitamin B12.

Milk and milk products (milk, sour-milk products, cheese). Milk and milk dairies are rich source of dietary calcium, also provide protein, phosphorus, vitamin A, and vitamin D.

Fats, oils  (fats and oils of vegetable or animal origin – lard, margarine, oil – healthy sources of fat can be found in fish, nuts and certain fruits and vegetables, such as avocados). From five basic food groups, fats and oils is the group that we should use less.

Vegetables contain many vitamins and minerals. However, different vegetables contain different nutrients, so it is important to eat variety vegetables. For example, green vegetables typically contain vitamin A, dark  green vegetables contain vitamin C and K, vegetables like broccoli and related plants contain iron and calcium. Vegetables are very low in fats and calories.

Fruits are rich in fibers, vitamins and natural sugars. They are low in calories and fats. Consuming different vegetables give you variety vitamins and help in your healthy diet.
